How do I qualify for home repair assistance?
Minor Home Repairs: After conducting an initial site visit to explore the home repair need, the Mountain T.O.P. staff will also determine if the home is safe for youth and adult volunteers. Mountain T.O.P. is a partnership ministry and asks for homeowners to contribute what they can to the cost of the project. The best partnership looks like a homeowner covering the cost of the materials while Mountain T.O.P. provides the labor to complete the project. However, if that is not possible, we will work with you to find what works for the homeowner.
Major Home Repairs: After conducting an initial site visit to explore the home repair need, the Mountain T.O.P. staff will also determine if the home is safe for youth and adult volunteers. Most of our major home repairs are funded through a federal USDA grant, which comes with some requirements, including proof of homeownership and an income of $59,000 or less.
If a major home repair project cannot be funded through the USDA grant, we ask for the homeowners to contribute to the cost of the project. The best partnership looks like a homeowner covering the cost of the materials while Mountain T.O.P. provides the labor to complete the project. However, if that is not possible, we will work with you to find what works for the homeowner.
The waitlist for major home repair projects can be up to 1.5 - 2 years.
Mountain T.O.P. is a partnership ministry. We believe in promoting dignity and that everyone has something to offer. If you can pay for materials, Mountain T.O.P. can provide the labor and expertise. We have access to donations and grants that help families or individuals who may not be able to afford all of the necessary repairs on their own.
Mountain T.O.P. completes home repair projects through the work of volunteers. The Mountain T.O.P. staff will plan and lead the projects, but the work will be completed by volunteers. Our groups are diverse and will include individuals from many different backgrounds. All are welcome at Mountain T.O.P. and we expect the same from you. Our volunteers are not professionals but they will do quality work to the best of their ability. The group will be visited by a Mountain T.O.P. staff member at least once during the day, who will ensure project quality, hear your questions or concerns, and lead a short devotional. The group will bring their own lunch with enough to share with you.
We require that the homeowner or other family member be present the entire time while volunteers are working. Volunteers will also need access to electricity, water, and bathrooms.
